In a heartfelt response to the tragic Yelwata attack, the Harvesters Africa Empowerment Foundation (HAEF) partnered with The Gideon & Funmi Para-Mallam Peace Foundation and the Benue State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to deliver essential relief materials to victims on June 27, 2025. This initiative aims to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the horrific events that unfolded in Yelwata.
Tragedy Strikes Yelwata The Yelwata community, located in Guma LGA of Benue State, faced a devastating attack by suspected Fulani militia during the night of June 13 into the early hours of June 14. This brutal assault resulted in the loss of more than 200 lives, predominantly among vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. Many of these individuals had sought refuge in Yelwata from neighboring areas, hoping to find safety.
A Commitment to Compassion During the distribution of relief materials at the International Market IDPs Camp in Makurdi and the Yelwata IDPs Camp, Miss Diepriye Okunye-olu, the Leader of the Harvesters Foundation Team, expressed her deep sympathy for the victims. She encouraged them to accept their current situation as part of a greater plan and to maintain hope for the future.
The foundation initiated the Benue Relief Project in response to the dire conditions faced by the IDPs, aiming to provide support and alleviate their hardships. While acknowledging that the donated items might not completely resolve their challenges, Miss Okunye-olu assured the community that further assistance is on the way.
Community Support and Solidarity Senior Apostle Gen Mike Nkire, Assistant Secretary General of CAN Benue Chapter, thanked the Harvesters and Para-Mallam Foundations for their unwavering support and compassion towards the victims. He prayed for an end to such violence in the region, emphasizing the need for peace and unity.
Titus Terfa Abah, the Youth Leader of CAN in Benue State, also praised the humanitarian efforts, urging the IDPs to make good use of the donated items to improve their living conditions.
Hon Matthew Mnyam, a former Special Adviser on Primary Education to the Governor of Benue State, conveyed gratitude on behalf of the Yelwata community. He acknowledged the vital role of the Harvesters Africa Empowerment Foundation and the Gideon & Funmi Para-Mallam Peace Foundation, praying for blessings upon the organizations and wishing safe travels for the team.
Relief Efforts in Action The humanitarian effort included the distribution of vital supplies such as rice, beans, garri, flour, clothing, toiletries, and other essential items to the IDPs sheltering at the Makurdi International Market and Yelwata IDPs Camps. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to support the displaced individuals and assist them in rebuilding their lives.
Notably, the Gideon & Funmi Para-Mallam Peace Foundation had previously contributed food items to the Yelwata IDPs on June 21, 2025, further demonstrating the community's solidarity in times of crisis.
Conclusion The Yelwata attack serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the challenges faced by many in conflict-affected regions. The compassionate response from organizations like Harvesters Africa Empowerment Foundation and their partners highlights the importance of community support and solidarity in times of need. As they continue their efforts, the hope for a brighter future remains steadfast in the hearts of those affected.
